Hunt-Scanlon Names GlaxoSmithKline CEO Garnier 2006 Global Human Capital Leadership Award Recipient |
|
Stamford, Conn., November 8, 2006, Visionary CEO Dr. Jean-Pierre Garnier of pharma giant GlaxoSmithKline received Hunt-Scanlon's prestigious Global Human Capital Leadership Award last week before a sold out audience of human capital experts from 12 countries at the Institute of Directors in London. Mr. Garnier is the first head of a non-U.S. company to take the award, which recognizes chief executives who demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to human capital management initiatives that lead to long-term sustainable success. Joe Palmer, senior vice president of Hunt- Scanlon Advisors, the independent research firm that delivers human capital management intelligence worldwide, said: "Dr. Garnier is one of the world's most respected business leaders and he was the ideal recipient of this award this year. Through a leadership philosophy that is both visionary and pragmatic, J.P. Garnier has positioned GSK for lasting success by placing a premium on attracting, developing and retaining top talent and by fostering a culture and value system that inspires a sense of purpose with employees." Dr. Garnier assumed the CEO role at GSK in January 2001 with the merger of SmithKline Beecham and Glaxo Wellcome. Since taking the helm, he has successfully guided GSK through a series of difficult management challenges including mergers, patent expirations, regulation, and an enormous restructuring of research and development operations. Today, GSK is the world's second largest pharmaceutical company with an impressive portfolio of some of the most important healthcare products in the world. "As a major company you want to recruit the best and the brightest and retain them, but that's not enough. Your employees are volunteers; they can leave at anytime, " Dr. Garnier urged in his acceptance speech. "However, if you align them with common goals that are truly uplifting, exciting and satisfying, and appealing to their good virtues, they will have something to live for. Then they will sign on and execute on those goals." Dr. Garnier went on to explain the importance of providing clear roles for employees, not relying on "organizational layers" to cascade information through the ranks, and emphasized "resilience" as the most valued characteristic to look for in new hires and to develop within current employees.
