Hunt-Scanlon Survey Reports Strong Productivity Gains in Headhunting Industry

Stamford, CT, March 27, 2001 - Although search work from dot-com clients declined significantly in 2000, productivity in the U.S. executive search industry climbed by double digits due to high demand for C-level executives at traditional brick-and-mortar companies and an upward trend in executive pay, according to a report by Hunt-Scanlon Advisors, a leading market research firm and online data provider to the executive recruiting industry. An analysis of recruiting fees and consultant head counts at the 10 largest U.S. search firms indicates revenue per search consultant rose 12 percent in 2000 to $1.18 million. Hunt-Scanlon's consultant productivity statistics for the five leading search firms appear in this morning's edition of The Wall Street Journal.

For calendar year 2000 revenue per consultant at eight of the 10 largest recruiting firms surpassed the $1 million mark. Russell Reynolds Associates topped the list for the second consecutive year, according to Hunt-Scanlon. Further analysis shows average fees per consultant have risen a staggering 45 percent over the past five years; in 1996 the average fees per consultant was $863,000, with only three search firms surpassing the $1 million average.

"The complexities of running a global business 24/7, combined with high expectations from the boardroom and Wall Street investors, have all contributed to companies paying a premium price for proven leadership," said Brian P. Lee, chief market strategist for Hunt-Scanlon. "These productivity gains are a clear indication that executive recruiters are one of the primary benefactors in the ongoing war for talent." Hunt-Scanlon's in-depth analysis of the U.S. and global executive search markets can be found in this month's issue of Executive Search Review as well as in the Hunt-Scanlon State of the Executive Search Industry report scheduled for release in May.
